SHORT AND EASY

Dangar Pachadi / Urad Dal Raita

Dangar Pachadi / Urad Dal Raita

Dangar Pachadi / Urad Dal Raita

Dangar Pachadi / Urad Dal Raita – A delicious and healthy raita made from Urad flour or batter. Too good for dinner times.

This is almost forgotten age old recipe which was prepared during grandparent’s time. It really surprised me as to why it has become a forgotten recipe in spite of being a healthy dish and easy to make. This Dangar Pachadi comes in really handy when we are too tired or lazy to cook. Yes sometimes I feel lazy to cook because of hectic daily routine. On such days simple recipe like this really helps.

Dangar Pachadi / Urad Dal Raita – A delicious and healthy raita made from Urad flour or batter. Too good for dinner times.

Urad Dal has many health benefits. It’s rich in Iron, Calcium, and Protein and fat. It’s one of the best sources of proteins for vegetarians. It helps in digestion. It is also rich in folic acid which is very essential for women during pregnancy.

Urad dal is extensively used in South Indian Cooking. The prime usage being making Idli and Dosa batters. It is used in tempering. I even use it in making chutneys by dry roasting. My Ridge Gourd Peel Chutney is one such example. My friend Priya even posted a delicious North Indian Urad Dal Curry on her blog. Do check it out.

This Dangar Pachadi tastes awesome when the curd used is bit sour. Some people even add turmeric into the tempering. But I like it to keep this recipe in milky white colour itself. Add a bit of more asafoetida gives a distinct flavour to this raita.

Let us see how to make this Dangar Pachadi / Urad Dal Raita

  2. Sour Curd: 3/4th cup
  3. Finely sliced green chillies: 1.5 tbsp.
  4. Oil: 1 tbsp.
  5. Mustard and Cumin Seeds: ½ spoon each
  6. Asafoetida: ¼ spoon
  7. Curry leaves: Few
  8. Salt: To taste
Instructions
  1. Heat oil in a tadka pan and add in mustard and cumin seeds once hot
  2. Add in asafoetida and curry leaves
  3. Add in sliced green chillies and fry for a minute and switch off the stove and keep it aside
  4. In a small mixing bowl add in Urad dal flour, curd, salt and mix well.
  5. To this mixture add in the prepared tempering and mix well.
Notes
  1. Instead of Roasted Urad dal flour, we can even use the grinded Urad dal batter when planned to make idlis. Make sure you keep a portion of the batter aside before mixing it with the rest of the ingredients.
  2. We can add raw sliced green chillies if required instead of frying them in oil
  3. Instead of Green chillies we can add two broken red chillies to the tempering and mix it with raita.
