Lemon Cucumber comes in different colours in different states and even in different colours. It is called Budamakaya in Hyderabad region where it is orange in colour and very sour. In Bangalore region it is called “Sambar Southekayi” meaning Cucumber used in Sambar.

Dosavakaya is a delicious side dish and is simple and easy to prepare. Only thing we need to take care that the cucumber is not bitter. If this is clear then you have your Dosavakaya on your way.

First few instances I did not show much interest in this vegetable, but dosavakaya proved it wrong for me. It tastes awesome with hot rice just like any other pickle.

Ingredients
  1. Lemon Cucumber - Half Portion or one complete cucumber depending upon the quantity required
  2. Mustard Powder - 1.5 Spoons
  3. Chilli Powder - 2- 3 Spoons
  4. Salt - As per taste
  5. Turmeric and Asafoetida - A pinch Each
  6. Lemon (Optional) - 1/2 Portion
For Tempering
  1. Oil - 4 tbsp.
  2. Mustard and Cumin Seeds - 1 spoon each
  3. Asafoetida - 1/4 spoon
  4. Broken Red chillies (Optional) - 2
Instructions
  1. Wash the cucumber and pat dry. Make sure it is completely dry. Otherwise the pickle will get spoiled.
  2. Cut the cucumber into half and taste a piece of it. It should not be bitter
  3. once it tastes ok, cut a portion of the pulp in the middle and taste to check for the bitterness. Some cucumbers taste bitter at the centre where the seeds are concentrated
  4. If the cucumber tastes good at the centre then dice it into small cubes along with the seeds
  5. If it tastes bitter at the centre, scrape out all the seeds completely and wash it under the running water and check again if it tastes good. If yes go ahead for pickling it else discard the cucumber
  6. Transfer the diced cucumber into a mixing bowl and add in Mustard powder, Chilli powder, Salt, Turmeric, Asafoetida and mix well.
  7. If the cucumber is not sour squeeze in some lime juice and mix well.
  8. For Tempering
  9. Heat oil in a small skillet and add in mustard and cumin seeds.
  10. Add in asafoetida and broken red chillies and switch off the stove.
  11. Add this tempering into the pickle mixture and mix well.
  12. The pickle gets marinated well within half an hour and is ready to be served.
