Moong Dal Sambar

Moong Dal sambar is a dinner recipe. I just love to eat Moong Dal Sambar on a rainy day or during winters when the night is cold and in the home there is hot rice and sambar. This is a onetime recipe. Mean to say tastes good when freshly prepared and consumed immediately without storing it for the next meal. This is also an instant sambar as it can be prepared very easily.

Moong Dal Sambar – Chosen Vegetables simmered along with boiled moong dal adding other spices. Moong Dal Sambar can be prepared with vegetables like Drumsticks, Onion Shallots, Brinjals, Tomatoes etc. You can even combine the varieties of the above mentioned vegetables.

I am going to narrate Moong Dal Sambar with tomatoes, which is very easy to prepare. You can even call it one pot Recipe J

Ingredients:

Moong Dal: ½ Cup

Ripe Tomatoes: 2 Medium Sized

Tamarind: Small Lemon Sized Soaked in water

Sambar Powder: 1.5 Spoons

Chilli Powder: 1 tsp.

Salt: As per taste

Water: 1.5 cups

Turmeric powder: A pinch

For Tempering:

Mustard and cumin Seeds: 1 Spoon each

Asafoetida: ½ spoon

Curry Leaves: Few

Red Chillies: 2

Method:

  • Wash moong dal and transfer it into the pressure cooked adding the requires amount of water.
  • Now add in the Chopped Tomatoes, Salt to the prepared moong dal and pressure cook for 2 whistles. The dal should be soft enough to easily mash
  • Once the pressure settles, open the lid add in the Sambar and Chilli Powders, Tamarind Juice, Turmeric Powder and water and mix well
  • Bring the sambar to boil and then simmer it for another 5-7 mins
  • Prepare the seasoning with the given ingredients and serve with hot rice.

  • Tamarind is optional. People who do not prefer sour taste can avoid tamarind as the sourness comes from tomatoes itself.
  • You can even add green chillies instead of adding chilli powder. It can be boiled along with dal.
