This Simple Sweet Potato dip is nothing but a raitha made out of sweet Potato. Boiled Sweet Potatoes added to the tempering and mixed with curd/yoghurt

So my weekend cooking started today with this Simple Sweet Potato Dip recipe. Usually I prepare one vegetable and one dhal on weekdays. While on weekends I try add on some additional items on my menu. These add on’s typically include Raitha’s/Chutneys etc.

As I mentioned earlier Raitha is one my favourite side dish in my meal. I just love the vegetables and green chillies mixed with curd/Yoghurt. I prepare Raitha’s with many veggies and sometimes even with flours. These can be quick side dishes and compensate the absence of any other dish on the menu.

Sweet Potato is a healthy and tasty vegetable. Now days it is replacing the potatoes in many traditional dishes. I have seen on some cooking channels where the famous chefs replaced the regular potatoes with sweet potatoes in samosa’s, cutlets and Tikki’s. I always liked sweet potatoes when boiled, mashed and mixed with some salt and green chillies. The snack shop lady near to my school used to sell boiled sweet potatoes. Mom used to forbid me from buying those because of Hygiene issues and hence she used to boil sweet potatoes at home to give it to meJ. When I started cooking I started making Stir Fry out of sweet potatoes which will be crispy and tastyJ. I hope that I would publish this recipe soon.

Ingredients
  1. Sweet Potato: 1
  2. Green Chillies: 2
  3. Roasted Sesame Powder: 1.5 Spoons
  4. Roasted Peanut Powder: 1 spoon
  5. Salt: To taste
  6. Thick Curd or Yoghurt: 1 Cup
For Tempering
  1. Split Black Gram: 1 Spoon
  2. Mustard and Cumin Seeds: 1 Spoon each
  3. Asafoetida: A pinch
Instructions
  1. Peel the skin of the Sweet Potato and boil it until soft enough to mash. You can even Pressure cook it. Mash the Boiled potatoes
  2. Finely Chop the green chillies and keep it aside
  3. Heat oil in a small Tadka pan and once hot add in Black gram and fry for few seconds
  4. Now add in Mustard and cumin seeds and allow them to splutter and add asafoetida
  5. Add the sliced green chillies and fry for a minute
  6. Now add the boiled mashed sweet potatoes and fry for few minutes.
  7. Switch of the stove and allow it to cool
  8. Now add in salt, Roasted Sesame powder and Roasted Peanut powder to this mixture and mix well
  9. Now the curd/Yoghurt and mix well.
  10. Simple sweet potato dip is ready to serve.
Notes
  1. Adding Roasted Sesame and Peanut Powder is optional. You can avoid adding them if you like just the sweet potatoes and green chillies
  2. Do not add the curd when the mixture is hot. Allow it to cool for 10-15 mins and then add in the powders and Curd for best taste.

Roasted Peanut Powder: 1 spoon

Salt: To taste

Thick Curd or Yoghurt: 1 Cup

For Tempering:

Split Black Gram: 1 Spoon

Mustard and Cumin Seeds: 1 Spoon each

Asafoetida: A pinch

Method:

Simple sweet potato dip is ready to serve.

Notes:

Adding Roasted Sesame and Peanut Powder is optional. You can avoid adding them if you like just the sweet potatoes and green chillies

Do not add the curd when the mixture is hot. Allow it to cool for 10-15 mins and then add in the powders and Curd for best taste.
